HOW NOT TO LOSE YOUR SHIRT ON WALL STREET

Wall Street is the so called metonym for the United States financial market. It is a 1.1km strip that traverses from Broadway  to South Street and is home to the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). The Big Board as how NYSE is sometimes called, is the  world’s largest stock exchange and includes other well known bourses like NASDAQ and the New York Mercantile Exchange.  Traders like Michael Bloomberg, Warren Buffet, Bernie Madoff among many others are the iconic investment gurus that thrive  on the site.

The unofficial credo of Wall Street is said to be “greed is good.” Nonetheless, the lusting financial markets have now tapered  down, despite of a 30 percent increase in stock market prices; and a bull run that is expected to hold out till the end of the year. Many analysts expected a healthy pull back despite encouraging trends. But, investors were advised to prepare for a  market correction---- or a 5 to 10 percent decline, anytime soon.

Despite the rally in share prices, investors were lukewarm on the uptick; and recalculated their portfolios to include more  blue chip stocks that pay higher dividends. These types of investments have the financial muscle to survive any market  adjustment that may take place in the future.

Greed is good, if you can cover your back to see that you don’t lose your shirt in the process. As per Wall Street lingo, you  only play with money that you can afford to lose.

Here's to better investment opportunities for 2016!

Understanding Stock Options for Beginners

stock options

Many wannabe traders think that stock options are stock substitutes that require higher leverage and lesser capital. After all, an option is used to bet on the direction of the stocks to either buy or sell at a specified strike price and date --- just like common stocks. But options have a  different characteristic, and uses terminologies that differ with common stocks.

There are two positions in options: calls and puts. A call conveys the right, but not the obligation to buy a financial instrument at a strike price, before expiration. On the other hand, a put goes the other route. It conveys the right, but not the obligation, to sell an instrument at a strike price before expiration.

Trading in stocks may be compared to gambling in a casino when you bet against the house. If you have a string of luck, then you have a strong chance of winning against the house. It may also be compared to betting at the racetracks, where all bets are placed in a pool. The winning bets share the pool based on calculated payoffs, otherwise known as the parimutuel system. The racetrack earns as it gets a cut for the use of the venue to trade.

In mathematical terms, winning in an options --- is nothing but a zero sum game of chance; and  like in  all betting games, you only play with monies that you can afford to lose - or you stand to lose your shirt.

Review: BPI Family Bank, Pamplona Tres, Las Pinas

The BPI Family Bank in BFB Building, is situated along Real Street right across the Lozada Market in Las Pinas City. It is a small branch with an amiable staff headed by the Bank Manager, Ms. Ana Marie Lim. I was there this morning to open a UITF (Unit Investment Trust Fund) in High Yield Dividend Investment.

It was nothing grand, just an initial salvo on the equities market by way of a UITF investment. Ms. Lim was ever solicitous and tried to explain to me the intricacies of this financial instrument. She showed me other types of instruments and the graphs of price trends in the last one year.

She must have been worried that I may not have the financial savvy of a wannabe investor. I assured her that I know my numbers and I am familiar with stock trading. I informed her further that I am a freelance writer who writes about the financial markets, so I know what I am getting into.

Ms. Lim is a friendly person who epitomizes trustworthiness in banking institutions. She looks kind, the type whom you wouldn't mind putting your hard-earned money into. Like the BPI Group, she represents an institution that is reliable, trustworthy, and stable. I am quite certain that whatever little money that I may have with them, will be in safe hands.
