ROBBERY WHILE ON A JEEPNEY RIDE

I took a jeepney from Vito Cruz to Binondo this morning. I was on my way to Chinatown to take some pictures and sample the food that were mentioned in Rappler a few days ago.

While on the jeepney, I noticed two elderly ladies talking animatedly. They were nicely dressed --- dapper-looking attire, nice bags, and a little jewelry by way of a necklace, ring, and earrings.

All of a sudden, I saw a young man sitting on the wayside suddenly stood up and approached the woman facing me. He moved fast and held both of her ears. I then heard a piercing shout from her, and I thought that she must have been hurt.

She told us that the man grabbed both her earrings that were clip-ons. Those were a pearl jewelry set, consisting of a necklace and ring that she was still wearing at that time, and it cost her around P20,000.

Well, it really looked expensive and I wonder why she wore it in the first place. It was good that the robber did not get her bag and other jewelries.

This all took place in broad daylight with many people milling around. Robberies in public transport are now becoming rampant with the coming Christmas season, and some people may now be that desperate.

Please be careful when you are out in the streets. Never dress up in a way that would call attention to yourself. Always keep watch on where you are going and look around, as somebody can just jump in on you; and before you know it, you have just been robbed!

Rustic Life of a Filipino Farmer

The onset of the rainy months triggers the planting season in the Philippines by farmers in the  Region Four of Laguna. The season is a welcome respite for farmers whose farms are not irrigated, since the rains would mean enough water in the fields until harvest time.

However, this season would also mean more pest and rats on the fields. As a consequence, farmers don't usually put in that much inputs in the form of fertilizers, labor and pesticides. It has been experienced several times that the yield during the rainy months is lower that those in summer months.

There are times too that the fields may be submerged in floodwaters with farmers losing their investments in the process. Hence, we say that farming is akin to gambling, since you cannot tell with certainty on what will happen in the future.

The planting technique during the rainy months is different from that in the summer. Farmers cannot plant sweet smelling rice like Bordagol, that would attract rats. Rice varieties should also be tolerant of flood waters and be harvestable in 3 1/2 months. The reason behind it is, so you can harvest right away and not exposed the field to further risk.

Planting should be in coordination with your neighbors, as those who plant first or last,  may experience the onslaught of rats, pests, and Maya birds that could lead to insurmountable losses. Planting is a scary endeavor if you do not plan ahead, since you don't know how mother nature will play it out in the next few months.

I am doing a study of farm techniques, financing, and support from the local government. It will be submitted to HubPages, a portal where I submit my more serious work on the Philippine economy and politics. Meanwhile, I have collated pictures that will go with my articles and among them are posted on this article.

ON THE PSYCHOLOGICAL NEED FOR FOOD

Food Cravings of the Elderly

I often wonder why my 79 year old mother always craves for food. But if you give her food, she would just nibble on it. She is a picky eater, so I often wonder why this incessant craving for food.

I am not big on food either, as I eat whatever is within my reach. If hungry, I drink coffee, eat a banana, or any food that's just nearby.

I don't have cravings nor do I go out of my way  to eat a particular kind of  food. My mom's incessant food demands that she won't even eat, makes me go crazy. I can't understand it, and it makes me go ballistic --- just like what happened this morning.

I say to her, that we buy biscuits and fruits and put them in a table near her. If she gets hungry, she can just grab anything she likes and munch on it as much as she wants.

I don't think that she is even hungry, and these demands are just her psychological need for attention.  I think, that as you get older, food becomes unimportant. It  simply becomes a means to drive  the hunger pangs away.

POSTSCRIPT:
 
It finally dawned on me that my mom's urgent need for food early in the morning, is so she can feed her cats! Whoa! I now realized that taking care of an elderly parent, would also include feeding her pets of three cats and a dog!

Now, go tell that to the birds! :D

Supermoon and Heavenly Apparitions

The Supermoon Phenomenon

The Supermoon was coined in 1979 by Richard Nolte, an astrologer which describes the occurrence when the Moon is at its nearest point to the earth. What results is a phenomenon that is seldom seen --- an eerily large moon whose brilliance is about 30 percent more than the ordinary full moon. 

There are strange beliefs that scares some people--- that since man and other living things are mostly made up water, the gravitational pull of the moon may cause the body to react negatively. They fear that it may exacerbate the lunacy and weird behavior in people and other living creatures. Hence, the occurrence of the Supermoon, which happens from four to six times in a year makes people extremely scared. 

The last extreme occurrence happened in March 19, 2011 and the supermoon in 2014 is not expected to be as brilliant as this last known occurrence.

I woke up early --- at around 1 to 2am on August 10 to take pictures of the Supermoon. When I focused my Nikon S100 camera on the bright moon, I got amazed by its brilliance in the dark sky. The moon was brighter than anything that I ever saw.  There were dark spots, that was seen through the naked eye and it looked very eerie.

When I took my first shot, I got surprised that what came out was the number “7.” I must have moved the camera at an angle, but seeing a brightly lighted number seven in the sky was a most humbling experience. Being God-fearing, I felt that the Lord Almighty must be giving me a sign.

Many friends said that it was God’s number which meant --- perfection or completion. I tried to understand what it really meant, fearing that it may be something ominous. Maybe, God was telling me that I have to do another endeavor or that my work on earth is already complete. Oh, how morbid!

Holy Almighty One! I am far from the finish line and I still have lots of things to do. I hope, that what it really means is another line of work that I have to concentrate on.

What happened on that day?

In the Philippines, one city suspended operations in the locality because of the high tide. Nonetheless, no other incidents like volcanic eruptions or of lunatics prowling the countryside or the city were reported. It was business as usual. 

Well, I hope it stays that way!

Tell Me Frankly, Did You Miss Me?

On Relationships

As somebody who goes through life with a passion, I sometimes fail to notice how I affect other people. I always have the knack of feeling other people’s pain, turmoil and joy even from afar. I can sense what they are going through even if they try hard to hide it from me.

I knew this sense of perceptiveness as a child – and it scared me like crazy! I knew that I can instantly connect with people, and would know offhand what they feel even without talking. Not exactly their thoughts, but more on how they feel at that particular moment.

This knowledge leads me to study a difficult course --- Accountancy to take my mind out of it. The study would make me grounded on things that are earth-bound and practical.

Nothing ephemeral for me, all things that I see must be run by logic and with mathematical precision. Early on, I decided to run away from things that I don’t understand. This perceptiveness however, does not go away. I have used it several times when I deal with people and have taken advantage of it ---in business. But personal relationships are different. I am still clueless when it comes to my friends and the significant other.

I supposed, God’s given gift does not cover everyone! LOL!

POSTSCRIPT: I asked some friends if they missed me when I was gone for a few days. They said, "Nope. We didn't notice." I knew they were lying. I can tell. LOL!

Sexy Lady: One Hot Momma For a Friend

As the saying goes, “Birds of a feather flock together.” I heard this said so often, that it must have been embedded in my grey area by now. If this is true, then I must be one multi-colored bird that flies around with different flocks.

I am always typecasted with those in the academe and the writer’s group --- and often branded as one nerdy and esoteric character. I admit, I am guilty on all counts! But, I am more than that! I have friends too who are of a different breed, that most nerdy friends would not even know exist.

Me: “Why are you here? I am working…. I’ll see you Sunday!”

Martha: “You’re one old woman! Why don’t we go out? Let us go malling and watch a movie later!”

Me: “You know I don’t like to go out! Hey, what is that? You’re wearing a micro-mini with a slit on the sides? Everything is showing! Why don’t you put on something decent?”

Martha: “This is decent! You’re too cooped up in your work that you don’t know how to live anymore!” LOL!

Me: “What is that thing popping out? Better change your dress to hide that! What you’re doing is black-hat advertising! You’re pushing things too far, girl!” Heheheh!

Martha: “What black hat are you talking about? I am fiery red and always hot!”

Me: “Ok, hot mamma ---- get out of here so I can finish my work!”

POSTSCRIPT: This hot mamma is a 68 yr old grandmother of seven who, they say, is the cause of her children’s migraine attacks! Lol! But, I don’t mind her. She is one of those characters that I can adroitly see beyond the exterior. When I get to take out the entire flap, make-up, and esoteric clothes ---- underneath it lies a true and trusted friend!

Freelance Writing: Work, Compensation, and the Christian Faith

 

 

 

Author’s Note: The bubblews site was down for a few hours. It prompted a 705 error. Horrible! I wrote this post when the site was down, before doing my next round of assignments in another portal. Good it is up and running now! 

ON WORK, COMPENSATION, & CHRISTIAN FAITH

This is the first week in my almost two years as freelance writer that I earned much. Not really much, but this week tops it all. This trend is going to last till next week. How I did it is pretty much the same way as how others do it----I view my current project as if it will be my last work on earth. Hence, it has to be the best that I can do at the moment.

It has been a long and hard climb, of keeping the faith and driving myself to excel in a craft which is not my first passion. At the back of my head, I know that I am first and foremost –--an Accountant. It is my reality where I can swim most confidently in an ocean that I call home. Writing is a passion, and I didn’t know that it is one, until circumstances forced me into it.

I got another round of assignments just this minute, and it will keep me busy for sometime. What is the topic all about? No, it is not about stock trading or the techie stuff that I usually crank out. It is coming up with a book--- of Christian Prayers. Fifty prayers for everyday experiences at 150 words each. I did not know that my faith can drive me to this extreme. I love my God and I adhere to my faith. But writing a whole book of prayers ---is something I never imagine that I can do.

I am ever thankful to the Lord and Master for all the gifts that He has given this faithful servant. I am happy that I still walk God’s path towards eternal life where I will find my Master’s abode.

In Jesus Name, I pray.

Sun Broadband: One Significant Day of a Writer

What happened today? Nothing really, just these…….

My BroadBand Connection Gone Bonkers

I woke at around noontime to find my sun broadband dead as a dodo. I cannot connect online! All work assignments for submission today have been re-scheduled for tomorrow. Real nasty! I tried to fix it myself, but nothing happened. I had to go to the nearby mall to inquire if there was something wrong at their end --- well, I was right. They had glitches from noontime till around 7pm today. Woe to freelance writers, that’s money down the drain for us!

Offer from Academe

I got a call from one university south of Manila, to join their faculty in Accountancy on a full time basis this coming semester. The school is run by Rotarian fathers and they need a faculty to handle their higher accounting subjects. This is my area of expertise, but I have to refuse. There are still many things that I have to do. I have not gone headway into the Accounting outsourcing work, that I had planned for a year now. Another offer was to teach Cost Accounting to Financial Management students. Again the subject matter is my forte, but I know that I will have problems with non-accountancy students. It is always hard for them to grasp accounting in a manufacturing set-up, and that's difficult for me.

RECAPITULATION

I have not done much today and may do several articles tonight. The physical world can sometimes get into our online work, that if we can't schedule it adroitly, either one of them suffers in the long haul.

Nikon CoolPix S100: My New Writing Buddy

I have been dabbing on journalism once in a while that I know I need a small camera to take pictures of events instantly. I need something slim and easy to carry, so I can take pictures anywhere and everywhere I go. This has been on my mind in the last few months but I can't seem to make a go out of it, since I squirm whenever I see the price.

This morning, with my usual walk-around to air my congested grey cells, I decided to have my burger with bacon at the nearby Minute Burger stall. On my way, I passed by a pawnshop store and was surprised to see an array of cameras that they have for sale.

I saw a beauty, a Nikon CoolPix S100, that sells for a few thousand pesos. I tested it and it looks great! It's small enough to be inconspicuous, but takes clean and clear pictures. It is just what I needed when I go around the metropolis to take shots of what I plan to write about.

To be doubly sure, I called up my daughter, Maricat, to ask her if it is a good buy --- and she said yes! Well, I am now a proud owner of a small camera the Nikon CoolPix S100, that I plan to use in the next few days. But first, I need to study the features on how to take good shots before I give it a dry run.

Whewww....rallies and demonstrations, here I come! I will be where the action is! Me with my little camera nosing around......:D

Filipinos are known as non-savers. If we earn a little money, all we think about is spend it on frivolities like cell phones, laptops, gadgets, and a social life that is far beyond our financial means. I cringe whenever I see people throw away money on the most mundane things. You do not need a top of the line cell phone or laptop to be functional. An ordinary gadget with the basic amenities/features is always an option whenever you think of buying.

Having the most expensive and up-to-date gadgets just to keep up with the Joneses, is a fool-proof way of emptying your pockets. These techie toys go down in value and would be replaced  by newer models a year from now. Meantime, what you now buy would be passe and you may be compelled to buy a newer version next year.

It is a never ending cycle, which leaves your pockets running empty. A lifestyle to imitate the others, is another fool-proof way of getting into bankruptcy. I never believe in eating out all the time as a means to live your life. Buying expensive food to be at par with your peers is not going to get you anywhere. When the money runs dry, your peers will not be there to throw you the ropes. You will be on your own to paddle your way out of the quagmire.

They say that the best way to prove your point is to put your money where your mouth is. Hence, I plan to be a small time investor on my own in the next one month. I have seen former students investing in blue chip stocks by keeping a portion of their salaries for investment. This is a good sign, where I get to see kids barely out of college, learning the ropes fast on money handling and stock trading.

At the outset, I believe that putting all your money in a savings account is never a good idea. It will earn you a few pesos, and nothing much by way of asset appreciation. An option would be --- small time investment in mutual funds. You can research about it online before deciding on where to invest. Another option would be to invest in the PSEI or index funds. These investments do not necessarily have to involve large sums; but spreading yourself around, may be the best strategy for your money to grow.

If you are not risk averse, you can play around with a few thousand pesos in the stock market. However, you need to study about stock trading since this is the fastest way to lose your shirt. This type of investment is not for the faint hearted. Due to the risk involve, you should only put in the amount that you can afford to lose.

Other ways of being a small time investor in the Philippines, is through the outsourcing business. Most businesses in the United States and Europe outsource their admin, marketing, and accounting functions to professionals in countries like the Philippines, India, and other countries where labor is cheap. This is a good way for Filipinos to earn, as you are paid in dollars, and spend the money in Philippine pesos. With a P43:$1 exchange rate, this option has been always a win-win situation for everyone.

Other small time investment opportunities, are affiliate marketing. This is done by online writers and marketeers to make money by creating blogsites and linking them to Adsense, Amazon, Ebay, Chikita, and other affiliate firms. There are many tools online that can help you create the best blogs that would fly high in cyberspace. 

Bottom Line

Creating the best investment mix for yourself, would mean a life that is rewarding and financially fulfilling. This has been a trend for several years now and many are seeing their dreams come true by working at their own pace and time.

My First Filing of a DMCA Complaint to Google

I filed my first DMCA (Digital Millenium Copyright Act) complaint to Google a while ago. I have to teach myself on how to do it and learn it by reading a number of materials online. Since it was my first time, I had a hard time on going about it.

There was one hubber who said that we need to file a letter of complaint to the site owner. I tried to do that by searching the owner's online/IP address. Lo and behold!  I got hold of his email address too.

I cranked out this letter, and sent it to him via Gmail. But this guy is slippery, the email got bumped by Gmail - telling me that this person's email address does not exist.

If I can't reach him, what do I do? The most logical move, is to report him to Google. This guy is the first DMCA complaint that I filed ever since I started with online work. There will be around ten more sites to follow. One fellow is in Korea. I just don't know if he is from the north or the south.

These characters either copy my content word for word or use my name to crank out their lousy articles. It's time to get back at them and give them a beating! They disturb my peace by copying my work and pretending to be me.

I say, enough is enough. This old woman is going to fight back by filing DMCA complaints to all of these rascals, until they grow tired of being booted out by Google.

I am posting this letter online to mark the first time that I filed a DMCA complaint. A feather on my cap, I have arrived!  Lol!

When I was still in the academe, I used to tell students of mine to be careful with what they post in FB or any social sites. You leave digital marks whenever you post, even if you don't use your real name. There are ways of finding out on who you are.

If you write online, you're traceable. If you copy quotes or post pictures without naming your source, you will get in trouble. If you come across owners like me, I file a DMCA complaint against you, and you get booted out of Google.
